JLG Safety Alert from Bechtel

8/9/2007
Location not disclosed -- Bechtel Systems and Infrastructure, Inc. distributed an ES&H Alert to its subcontractors on July 25, 2007 warning of a potential issue with bolt shear on JLG aerial lifts (model 860 SJ).

The report identified an incident involving bolt shear in the swivel joint of the boom. The bolts are covered by a protective rubber cover plate and may not be noticed during quick visual inspections.

In order to determine if damage to the bolts has occurred, the cover plate will need to be momentarily pulled away to reveal the bolts in question.

Contact was made with the JLG, Inc.'s product safety department by Safety Management Group to confirm the accuracy of the alert. Mark Rangos, safety engineer with JLG confirmed the validity of the report and also reiterated that the basket assembly is connected to the boom through a large pin and the sheared bolts in the alert document issued by Bechtel will not cause the basket to separate from the boom.

Regardless, users of this model of JLG who encounter severed bolts are to immediately out of service for repair and a thorough inspection.
