Indianapolis – Twenty-eight industry leaders assembled at the offices of Safety Management Group in Indianapolis on March 7, 2008 to attend an all-day “Executive” OSHA 10-Hour Construction Course.
The event was sponsored by John Lambert, Executive Director of Global Facilities Delivery, Eli Lilly and Company. Special guest/attendee was Jeff Carter, Deputy Commissioner, Indiana Department of Labor (IDOL) responsible for Indiana Occupational Safety and Health Administration (IOSHA).
The objective of this special OSHA 10-Hour Construction Course was to increase attendees' safety awareness and to familiarize them with ten of the subparts from the IOSHA Construction Standards book, as well as provide an atmosphere for networking with invited executives. John Lambert shared: “This program was designed to provide the executives and management of local owners and contractors with an updated understanding of key OSHA construction safety requirements. It also provided a unique opportunity for industry leaders and Deputy Commissioner Carter to exchange ideas about what we can do to help achieve our mutual goal of making the Indiana construction industry injury-free.”

Attendees were provided information about cultural and business factors that facilitate construction safety. They were also briefed about IOSHA 29 CFR 1926.00 Standards, including the following subparts: General Safety and Health, Confined Space Entry, Occupational Health and Environmental Controls, Personal Protective and Life Saving Equipment, Fire Protection, Basic Electrical Safety, Scaffolding, Fall Protection, Excavations, and Ladders and Stairs.
The OSHA Outreach Training Program is the safety administration’s primary method of delivering training about the basics of occupational safety and health.
According to www.osha.gov, over 1.3 million people have received training through the outreach program. It is believed that this was the first time that the program has been specifically focused towards a diverse group of strategic leaders within the construction industry.
