New Indianapolis Airport to Open This Month

11/1/2008

Indianapolis – This month will mark the opening of the New Indianapolis Airport project, the culmination years of dedicated work by many people, including several Safety Management Group associates.

Safety Management Group partnered with Pillar Group and AIK Insurance to deliver safety services through an owner managed insurance program (OMIP).

Work began on developing a safety program for the project which was then referred to as the “Midfield Terminal Project,” in December 2003. Mobilization occurred in October 2005 and concluded in October 2008. During that time period, the following Safety Management Group Associates delivered services to the project at the site:

Jeff Brown, Kent Burget, Andrew Cleeter, Kim Fulford, Jeff Groce, Ron Hanson, Jason Kamman, Michael Martin, Collin McGrady, John Mutnansky, Tim Price, Michael Ratliff, Tom Riley, Mark Sheehan, Susan Spaulding, Michael Winkler

The project encompassed the creation of a new airport for Indianapolis. The OMIP portion involving Safety Management Group included a new passenger terminal building and parking structures.

Contractors demonstrated a strong commitment to the safety program throughout the project. Incident rates were very low compared to national averages, with an OSHA recordable rate of 5.6 and a Lost Time Rate of .54 (rates based on incidents per 100 full-time employees).

According to newindianapolisairport.com, the new passenger terminal building covers approximately 1.2 million square feet of space, with 500 feet of terminal frontage on a 1000-foot, two-level curb front.

One of the first airports designed after new regulatory and security requirements initiated after September 11, 2001, the new terminal features a “Civic Plaza” area designed for pre-security gathering and concessions space with 200-foot diameter skylight.

The new terminal features 38 gates and over 145,000 square feet of baggage processing space. Ten escalators, 23 elevators, and 10 moving walkways will move travelers throughout the structure that features over 11,000 tons of steel.

A parking garage structure utilizes five levels totaling 2.5 million square feet to provide over 7,000 parking spaces for public and rental car access. Moving walkways will facilitate pedestrian movement from the parking structure to the terminal.

An energy plant was built to heat and cool the new terminal. This facility has over 9,100 tons of chilling capacity and, according to newindianapolisairport.com, provides over 231,000 lbs/hr of steam generation.

Congratulations to all the Safety Management Group Associates who helped make this a tremendously successful project.
