Ergonomics (or human factors) an applied science concerned with designing and arranging
things people use so that the people and things interact most efficiently and
safely —called also biotechnology human engineering human factors. It is the
applied science of equipment design intended to maximize productivity by reducing
operator fatigue and discomfort. The field is also called biotechnology, human
engineering, and human factors engineering. When ergonomics is applied correctly
in the work environment, visual and musculoskeletal discomfort and fatigue are
reduced significantly.
Companies once thought that there was a bottom-line tradeoff between safety
and efficiency. Now they embrace ergonomics because they have learned that
designing a safe work environment can also result in greater efficiency and
productivity. Recently, U.S. laws requiring a safe work environment have
stimulated great interest in Ergonomics - from ergonomic furniture to ergonomic
training. But it is in the design of the workplace as a whole where the greatest
impact can be seen for both safety and efficiency.
